"How to (social) market car pooling"

Have you heard the joke about the 3 people in a car going over the harbour bridge? No…… well you aren’t alone! Less than 5% of people in the Auckland Region travel as a passenger in a vehicle, which is just less than those that travel by bus. With the cost of travel nowadays why are we not making use of one of our most expensive assets (aside from our homes) and offer a lift to our work colleagues, friends or neitghbours? This saves money on fuel, the hassle of finding a parking space and you can have a good old chat on the way.

North Shore City Council and GHD have got together to investigate the ‘tools’ that could be used to promote the benefits of and break down the barriers to car pooling or ride sharing, with the use of focus groups and pilot surveys of North Shore’s residents and with the help of a major employer in Takapuna.

Danielle Kennedy, Caron Greenough from GHD and Debbie Lang from North Shore City Council will relate the work to date, the outcomes of the study and key learning from this innovative project.
