Bronwyn Coomer-Smit (Flow Transportation Specialists Limited)"Completing the Street" This paper describes the changes in road design from the traditional design of urban arterials as being the desire to provide for just moving as many motor vehicles as quickly as possible, to providing a design that takes into consideration the needs of all the users of the entire road right-of-way as well as responding to the adjacent landuse. This latter concept has been dubbed “complete streets” and is fast becoming a popular and challenging alternative to traditional arterial street design. This shift in design philosophy has a direct bearing on TDM as it results in improved infrastructure and amenity for sustainable modes of travel, including passenger transport, walking and cycling.
