2009 TDM Conference

The 3rd Annual Transport Demand Management

Conference in New Zealand

Flow Transportation Specialists Ltd and the Safe and Sustainable Transport Association of Aotearoa-New Zealand (SASTA) organised the 3rd Annual TDM conference held at the Mercure Hotel in Auckland on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 March 2009. The conference attracted transport planning and land use planning professionals from local authorities, government bodies and private consultancies throughout New Zealand and from overseas.

Transport or Travel Demand Management (TDM) is becoming an increasingly important tool for the management of traffic congestion and parking, influencing the demand for travel, and how and when trips take place.  This increased importance also reflects the concerns over local and global environmental effects of private vehicle based travel, the cost and availablity of fuel, the benefits of active lifestyles and the need for more sustainable solutions.

The conference involved a number of presentations and workshops.  These ranged from high level strategic land use-transportation planning issues to infrastructure projects to travel behaviour marketing, education and encouragement initiatives.   The conference focused on experience in Aotearoa-New Zealand, including what has worked, what hasn't worked, rural and urban initiatives, social marketing and behaviour change and ivolved several workshops to generate ideas and explore theories and inspirations.
